The WPTom CLI

wptom is the command-line tool for WPTom templates. It creates a site from a template, keeps it up to date without losing your edits, connects your computer to your license, and gives your AI assistant an MCP server. It’s open source on npm, has no install scripts and needs Node.js 22 or newer.

You don’t have to install anything: npx downloads the latest version and runs it.

Terminal window
npx wptom <command>

The first time, npm asks Ok to proceed? (y): press Enter.

Prefer a permanent wptom command (shorter, and works offline for the commands that don’t need the network)?

Terminal window
npm install -g wptom

Then type wptom <command>. Update it with the same command. Every page in these docs works with either form; npx wptom always runs the newest version.

Command What it does
wptom new [dir] -t <template> Create a site from a template
npm create wptom@latest The same, fully interactive
wptom update Bring in the template’s latest version, keeping your edits
wptom list Show every template and whether your license includes it
wptom login Connect this computer to your license
wptom whoami Show the connected account and device
wptom logout Disconnect this computer
wptom mcp Start the MCP server for AI assistants

wptom create is the same as wptom new; wptom ls the same as wptom list.

Option Used with What it does
-t, --template <slug> new The template, e.g. aurora (asked if left out)
--cms <name> new Where the content lives: files, sanity, or a template variant such as emdash (asked when the template has variants)
--dry-run update Show what would change, write nothing
--no-browser login Print the approval link instead of opening a browser
-v, --version Print the CLI version
-h, --help Show the list of commands and options
$ wptom --help
w wptom. v0.3.0

…

An unknown command prints Unknown command "…" and the help. Something to celebrate? Try wptom --party.

Where What
~/.config/wptom/config.json After wptom login: the device token, your email and plan. Readable only by you. Your license key is never stored. ($XDG_CONFIG_HOME/wptom/ if you set that.)
<your site>/.wptom/meta.json Which template, version and variant the site was created from. Commit it.
<your site>/.wptom/base/ A pristine copy of that version, so wptom update can tell your edits from upstream changes. Git-ignored; don’t edit it.

The CLI talks only to app.wptom.com (templates, login) and docs.wptom.com (the MCP server’s docs). It sends no analytics.
